Make Your Own Concoctions

Making your own products is always an alternative to buying them. While some things are easier to make then others, it might be fun to experiment with these recipes. Do be careful though, we all know what a bad chemistry experiment can do.

Hair Concoctions 


CHAMOMILE SHAMPOO
Ingredients:

  • 4 cups Boiling Water
  • 5 Tbs. Chamomile Flowers
  • 4 oz Castile Soap Flakes

Make herbal infusion by pouring 4 cups of boiling water over 5 tablespoons of chamomile flowers. Cover and steep 30 minutes. Strain and add 4 ounces of castile soap flakes. Makes 1 quart of shampoo. You can purchase the castile soap flakes from any company that sells herbs. This shampoo is very easy to make and is gentle on the hair.

In The Bath

PINA COLADA BATH SALTS
Ingedients:

  • 1 Cup Epsom Salts
  • 4-5 Drops Food Coloring
  • 1 Tbs  Coconut Oil
  • 5 Drops of Pineapple Fragrant Oil
  • 5 Drops of Coconut Fragrant Oil

For a frugal alternative to Epsom salts you can use a fine grade pool rock salt just substitute the Epsom salts in all our bath salt recipes for frugal pool salt. Just add all the ingredients together and mix well.


Mix the salt with the food coloring well. Do this by tossing the salt over and over again. Add dried rose petals, or lavender sprigs for a natural presentation. Add your bath salts to a decorative jar and place a small wooden spoon inside for a great inexpensive gift. 

FIZZLING BATH BOMBS
Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups cup of Baking soda or Bicarbonate of Soda
  • 1/2 cup of Citric acid
  • 2 tsp of Almond Oil or Apricot kernel oil
  • 1/2 tbs of Water
  • 5 drops of Food coloring
  • 10-15 drops of Fragrance oil or essential oil

Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl and stir until well mixed.
Drizzle in the almond oil and stir until mixture is moistened. Add more oil and fragrance and stir until well mixed.

If the mixture is crumbly then add more oil or a dash of water.

Roll the mixture into a ball using your hands or press it into a lightly oiled mold. Use a bath bomb mold or a chocolate mold. Let it slip out from the mold and then put the ball/shape on a sheet of wax paper and leave it to dry till it is hard. It make take several days.

Store them in a airtight container.

Use 1 Bath bomb per bath.
 

Pet Concoctions


FLEA POWDER
Ingredients:

1 Cup Rue
1 Cup Wormwood
1 Cup Rosemary
1 Cup Fennel
1 Cup Peppermint

Mix and grind one cup each of rue, wormwood, rosemary, fennel and peppermint. Grind to powder and dust animal, working in as you go.


FLEA WASH
Ingredients:

1 Cup Dried Rosemary
1 Quart Boil Water

Add one cup fresh or dried rosemary to one quart of boiling water. Cover and steep until cool. Wash dog and rinse well. Pour and work tea in and let dry.
